Cushman Celebrates 100 Years in Business

As we wrap our first 100 years in business, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the people who got us here—our incredible clients, our vibrant community, and of course the Cushman agents who make a difference in our clients’ lives everyday through dedication and personal attention. One thing that hasn’t changed since we opened our doors in 1922? Our commitment to our clients and our community.

As long standing residents and business owners in the Southeastern Massachusetts community, we’ve been growing, expanding, and treating clients like part of the family since opening our first office in Brockton. Now with several fully-staffed agency branches across Brockton, Norton, Lakeville, South Attleboro, and Halifax, we couldn’t be prouder of the relationships we’ve grown and the work we’ve done to help you live more and worry less.

We’d like to thank you, our clients and our community, for your support—and take a little trip down memory lane by sharing a look back on Cushman’s 100 Years in Business:

The Agency was established in May, 1922 by Arthur L. Cushman and his son Bradford Cushman. At the time they were life general agents and Brad decided to add Lumbermans Mutual as a company and write all forms of general insurance.

In 1924 they were offered a general agency in Portland, Maine, and decided to sell the business to Bradford’s father-in-law and brother-in-law, Willie I. Lane and Alden Lane, Sr. who ran the business until Alden L. Lane Sr. passed away in 1942. The business was then run by Alden’s wife, Marjorie and later her son, Alden “Bud” Lane from their office at 106 Main Street in Brockton. A partner, Murice Palmer, joined the firm and stayed until his death in 1960.

In 1960 the business moved to new quarters at 26 School Street in Brockton, and another partner, George Black, joined the firm. In 1969, Frederick “Ted” Lane joined the firm.

The business grew and in 1975 moved to its own location at 1776 Main Street in Brockton. In 1989, Bud Lane retired from the business after many years of dedication and work.

Mr. Black retired in October, 1995 and Michael E. Hoadley became a partner. Marc Lane joined the firm in 1989 and became a partner in 2000.

On September 1, 1995, our branch office was opened in Halifax, MA and on January 1, 1997 the agency purchased Thompson, Eaton & Boydon and merged their operation into 1776 Main Street, Brockton.

On April 1, 1999 the Fitzgerald Insurance Agency was purchased and merged into our branch office in Halifax.

On September 20, 2004, a second branch office was opened in Lakeville, MA.

On October 1, 2004, Cushman Insurance merged with Ora Andrews Agency, with offices in Norton and South Attleboro. Steven Saccocia became a partner of Cushman.

In 2011, The agency continued to grow, purchasing the T. Robert Sullivan Insurance Agency.

In 2020, Ted Hughes was made a partner, and in 2022 Michael Hoadley retired.

Today, we’ve spent the last year celebrating a whole century in business, and could not be prouder of how car we’ve come.

Over the last century, we’ve helped thousands of clients from across the area feel like part of the family, and no matter how they found us, we’re always glad they did. We’ve built our business on supporting our clients when they need it most—and working with them to find the best coverage at the best rates we can. With the new year approaching, we could not be more excited about Cushman’s future, and all the great work ahead. Here’s to the next 100 years!
